Bangladesh Study: Improving Health Outcomes of Pregnant Women
In 2019, Health Gauge, in collaboration with ICCDCR,B, launched a study that sought to make a difference for pregnant women who were at risk for developing hypertension.
Worldwide, hypertension impacts 10% of all pregnant women and can lead to severe complications such as long-term cardiovascular disability, preeclampsia and even death.
The 2019 study focused on women in Bangladesh, an area where incidents of hypertension among perinatal women is high, and where access to medical support is limited. So limited that, in some cases, pregnant women are only able to see a doctor once throughout their whole pregnancy.
Due to the limited access to doctors, hypertension is often not caught until it is too late. Currently, hypertension is responsible for 24% of all maternal deaths in Bangladesh. Health Gauge is looking to help change this.
By providing mothers with a wearable, mothers were able to monitor their blood pressure (and other health statistics) so that they would know when it was time to see a doctor. During the pilot study, mothers felt empowered to use the Health Gauge wearable to make decisions on when to go to the hospital.
At Health Gauge, we are driven by the idea that health technology can be used in developing counties to help people in desperate need. We are further driven by the desire to help people around the world to live quality, healthy lives.
Collaborating with ICCDCR,B in Bangladesh
Health Gauge is proud to have collaborated with the world-leading International Center for Diarrhoeal Disease Research (ICDDR,B) in Bangladesh – on an important study using affordable wrist wearable devices coupled with our AI/ML platform software and applications. This project, supported through a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation: Grand Challenge Grant, focused on the problem of pre-eclampsia and how latest generation personal health monitoring solutions can help to identify women at risk, and to reduce mortality of pregnant mothers and newborns.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is a world-renowned nonprofit organization that seeks to improve the quality of life for all individuals, around the world – and we are proud to have served an important need within their program. Founded by Microsoft CEO, Bill Gates, and his wife, Melinda Gates, the foundation is the world’s largest private charitable organization.

A Note From the CEO
In the last number of years, people have become more aware and interested in understanding their health and using wearables to help address basic health and wellness goals – such as counting steps and heart rate. While that kind of information was interesting, it wasn’t very rich or insightful. People want and expect greater accuracy, richness, and validity in helping address everyday health objectives – and it is only just recently with the advent of the latest generation wireless technologies, smart devices, and advances in AI and machine learning software that it has become possible to create solutions such as what we have created. And, we knew that also that people would continue to look to engage and work with their trusted care providers and clinicians to help them address their goals. To help people on every step of their personal health journey, we created the next generation of health and wellness applications.
